Success isn’t just something that falls into your lap or something you luck into. Of course, it’s happened for some people that way. Plain old dumb luck. But for most of us, it’s going to take hard work and one of the most important tools any business owner can possess: a mindset for success.

You’ve likely heard the quote:

“Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t, you’re right” – Henry Ford

If you’ve ever picked up a personal development or self-help book, you’ve probably heard that success begins in the mind. And as cheesy as it might initially sound, nothing could be closer to the truth.

Your attitude can literally make or break your business because it matters what kind of energy you’re putting out into the universe. Whatever you put out comes back to you, which is why entrepreneurs like you need to adapt a mindset for success if you want to see any real results from your business.

Here’s how you can do that.

1. Start the Day with Positive Affirmations.

Affirmations have proven to be one of the best ways to change your mindset. Ask any self-help guru worth their weight in books and you’ll hear the same thing time and again. Affirmations can help gradually transform your mindset by training your brain to think more positively. After saying your morning affirmations for a while, you’ll start to notice that you actually believe the things you’re saying about yourself and your business. And the more and more you believe it, the greater your chances of attracting success. So write down a few affirmations you think will help you develop your success-oriented mindset. Take a look at a few examples to help you get started.

  • Being successful is natural for me
  • I am a millionaire
  • New and exciting possibilities are opening up to me every day
  • I am worthy of my dreams and goals
  • I’m successful in everything I do
  • Money is an unlimited resource and it is always flowing my way.
  • I am a money magnet.
  • Prosperity is drawn to me.
  • Money comes to me easily and effortlessly.
  • I am aligned with the energy of abundance.

Use these examples as a guide to write your own affirmations using your own words and say your affirmations daily before you start working. If you want to take things a step further, find yourself a good manifestation workbook to help you with manifesting the things you want.

2. Have a Look at Your Vision Board

If you already have one, spend some time each day looking at your vision board. If you don’t have one, now’s probably the time to think about creating one. A vision board can help saturate you in your ideal lifestyle, get you thinking about it, and keep you excited about getting there. Hang one in your office where you can see it every day.

Taking a look at your vision board every day allows you to see your potential, which can give you the self-assurance you need to reach that potential. Your vision board can include anything from what type of car you want to drive and what type of house you want to live in to what you want your ideal career to be and what kind of vacations you want to take. Think about your ideal lifestyle and cut out or print out the images that represent that lifestyle. Paste them onto a large poster board in a collage-like way and look at it every day for a few minutes, imagining how it will feel once you get the things you want. You can also use a vision board app or create your own vision board book using a binder, paper, and sheet protectors like I did.

3. Write a Morning Gratitude List

Writing a morning gratitude list can help you dwell on the positive things that have happened to you lately. Write down three things you’re grateful for in your life each morning and review the list occasionally to see how amazing your journey has been. I reflect on my morning gratitude list at least a few times a week and it’s such a good feeling looking back at all of my amazing accomplishments.

Sometimes you forget the good things that happen to you, but writing them down can help you remember and put you in a positive mood to combat the day. So get a gratitude journal or notebook and use it solely for writing down the things you’re grateful for that day. You can also write down the good things that happened to you that day every night before bed.

4. Write Out Your Top Priorities for the Day

What are the things that absolutely must get done today? Write out your top three to five priorities to make sure they get done, whether it’s sending out an introduction email to a new client or finishing up a long project for a client you recently acquired. I like to make two separate lists so that my personal and business tasks stay separate. But if you want to combine your lists, that’s also an option. The main goal is to get your most important tasks out of the way first. You can use your phone’s Notes app, your reminder function, type up your list and print it out, or simply write your list by hand. Either way, make sure you get those top priority tasks completed by the end of the day to ensure you’re making progress with your goals.

5. Create a Daily Checklist

After you’re done writing down your top priorities, write out the rest of your checklist. What tasks need to get done that aren’t as urgent, but that you can get to today if you have the time? Separating your checklists into top priorities and regular priorities can help you tackle your most important tasks first. It can also give you a sense of accomplishment after completing the day’s tasks, but be careful not to be too hard on yourself if you don’t complete all of your tasks for the day. Leave some for the next day and try not to feel bad about it.

Oftentimes, things come up that are out of our control and there’s no reason to beat yourself up about it, as some of us tend to do. But that doesn’t mean use every little thing as an excuse not to get things done. For example, if your friends call you up and want you to go out to brunch, that’s not really the same as having to keep your kid home from daycare and take care of them all day because they’re sick. Hold yourself to a high standard, as if you were working for someone else.

6. Hang Inspirational Posters

Inspirational posters can help put you in a positive mindset to face the day head-on. They can really give you a boost on particularly bad days. Plenty of successful people will tell you that you’re going to have really good days and some really bad ones, too.

Having a few posters hanging up in your workspace can help remind you that there are still plenty of good days ahead and that you shouldn’t dwell so much on the negative. So pick out a few of your favorite quotes, print them out, and hang them up around your workspace.

I just printed out a good quote from the late, great Maya Angelou. It reads:

So start looking for quotes you like and use them to catapult you into a positive mindset each day.

7. Join a Social Media Group

Join an online group on social media sites like Facebook or LinkedIn that can help motivate you to keep going. A group of like-minded people can help you stay on the right track and keep a positive mindset. There are plenty of Facebook groups dedicated to developing and maintaining a positive mindset. Your social media group can provide support, advice, and even guidance in your times of need. Lean on them and get all you can out of interacting with those on the same or similar paths as yours.

You might also consider joining social media groups dedicated to the kind of business you want to open. For example, if you want to become a freelance copywriter, you could search for copywriting groups (there are a ton – I should know because I’m a member of several of them), such as Online Copywriters (Facebook), Copywriting Hacks – How to Write Copy & Influence People (Facebook). Or if you want to be a blogger and make money using your blog, you could search for blogging support groups, such as Blogging Like We Mean It.

8. Dress for Success

One of the best ways to get yourself into a mindset for success is to dress the part. Even if you’re just sitting in your kitchen at your desk, dressing up for the career you want can help you imagine yourself in that position and you’ll start to act as if you’ve already achieved the level of success you’re aiming for, which can help put you in the right mindset to achieve success.

With a positive attitude and an ensemble to match, you’ll feel more prepared to face the day’s challenges with confidence. The more confident you are, the better you’ll perform. And the better you perform, the higher your chances of becoming successful.

So get some business casual attire that you think will help get you one step closer to achieving business success. Dresses, skirts, blouses, slacks, button-ups, and polos are all great options for dressing for the career you want.

9. Watch Motivational Videos

Watching motivational videos on YouTube each morning can also help put you in the right mindset for success. You can watch Goal Coast videos or look up videos of motivational speakers such as Eric Thomas, Les Brown, Jim Rohn, Ariana Huffington, Chris Gardner (the one The Pursuit of Happyness was based on), or anyone you find motivational. Watch a video every morning before you start working on your business and get yourself really pumped up. Doing this can help you start to see yourself differently and know that you can do anything you set your mind to, no matter what obstacles you might face. These motivational speakers can remind you that any and everyone has the power to create the life they want and deter you from quitting because of a minor setback. So find the videos that inspire you and create a playlist.

10. Read a Chapter of a Motivational Book

If you’d prefer to read your information rather than watch it, get a few motivational books to help get you in the right mindset. I’ve recently adopted this practice and it definitely helps me feel better about myself and all that I’m trying to accomplish. I’d highly recommend the following three books:

You can always do your own research and find the books that really speak to you. The important thing is that you read them on a regular basis so that you can stop negative thinking dead in its tracks and start living life the way you were meant to.

Manifesting the Life You Want

Developing a positive mindset is something anyone can do. It just takes a bit of practice and a certain level of discipline. Use the tips above to get started and you’ll be more equipped to manifest the life you’ve always dreamed about. Remember, a mind is a terrible thing to waste. So start programming your mind for success and you’ll be one step closer to your ideal lifestyle.
