If you’re like most of us and want to make a decent part-time income, copywriting could be worth a try.
If you can write like you speak, follow directions, and use a specific tone when you write (i.e., humorous, authoritative, informational, etc.), then you might be able to succeed as a copywriter.
You don’t need any kind of formal training to be a copywriter (although it does help if you have some sort of background working with words).
I have a BA in English and a Master’s in Professional Writing, but a lot of of the best copywriters get started with nothing but a pen, paper, and the thoughts in their head.
But if you’re completely new to the world of copywriting, I suggest taking a short course on the subject so you’ll know just what to expect when you’re out in the real world trying to get clients.
Here’s what I do to make a consistent $5,000 a month writing copy part-time.
1. Consistently Update My Profiles and Porfolio
Anytime I get a new client, I update my portfolio. The more experience it appears you have, the more valuable you are to potential clients.
And I update it everywhere. LinkedIn. Facebook. My website. Everywhere that’s important.
Keep an up-to-date portfolio full of content from reputable and established brands.
Remember to do this consistently so that you’re always ahead of things and you can appear even better to your prospects and customers.
2. Always Be Learning
In most professions, things are always changing, sometimes at a rapid pace.
And you have to be able to keep up with the pace of things by making sure you’re constantly learning about anything new happening in the industry, as well as brushing up on your skills.
Read copy, compare advertisements.
See what’s working. Study it.
See what’s not. Avoid it.
One thing you can do is join professional organizations related to your industry so that you can keep up with what’s happening. You’ll likely get newsletters, be informed about industry events, and be given the opportunity to network with others in your field.
But always be learning more about how you can improve your craft and you’ll be well on your way to earning more money with your writing.
3. Get Repeat Business
One of the best ways to keep the money coming in continuously is to get past clients to hire you again and again and again.
It’s harder to convince someone new to hire you than it is to get someone who’s hired you before to hire you again.
Another thing to consider is when getting new clients to sign a contact, convince them it’s a better deal if they purchase more articles and on a monthly basis.
That way they’ll save more and you’ll make more. Win-win.
So if you haven’t heard from a client you’ve done work for in the past, send them an email and ask them if they have any content they need created.
You’d be surprised how much of an impact simply reaching out to your old clients can have.
4. Use a Talent Network
If you find it difficult to find clients on your own, consider a talent network that also acts as a content marketing agency, like Clear Voice.

A talent network and content agency like Clear Voice can help match you up with clients interested in writers in your niche.
Say you want to write business content. Clear Voice would match you up with clients who want business content. I’ve probably oversimplified the algorithm a little but you get the point.
Choose a niche you want to focus on and then start crafting content on your own blog or on other blogs or just in your portfolio.
Then apply for a few talent networks to see if you can get approved.

5. Create Stellar Content
One reason I’ve been able to keep pulling in the money month after month is because I strive to create great content.
I do thorough research. I use reputable sources. I comb over the details one too many times.
I re-write what needs re-writing.
Then I submit a first draft.
The majority of what I submit never comes back for a second draft.
Of course, it will occasionally (nobody’s perfect) and sometimes we don’t always hit the nail on the head for what the client wanted. But try to be as consistent with this as possible and always deliver your best work.

5. Get Published
Another thing you can do to bring more awareness to you and your services is get published.
So start looking up publications you may want to write for to help you establish some authoritatively in your niche or industry.
Then look up the writing guidelines for each publication and start pitching to your top choices once you’ve brainstormed a good list of potential ideas.
6. Network with Other Freelancers
Networking with other freelancers is a great way to get more copywriting work. Oftentimes, highly sought after freelancers don’t have the time to take on work when clients reach out to them.
So they sub contract out the work to freelancers in their network that might be interested in picking up the work.
So start networking with other copywriters on LinkedIn.
Whip your profile into shape, add some links, share your experience and anything else that would make you an attractive choice for potential clients as well as other freelancers.
LinkedIn is also a great place to find potential clients. I’ve had several clients reach out to me this way and ask if I’m open to work.
So put your best foot forward and get out there and make some good connections.
When you’re looking for people to connect with, try to find people who:
- Have a professional-looking photo
- Have their description fully filled out (and professionally)
- Have a captivating headline (or at least an informative one)
- Have a summary filled out that describes exactly what they can do for their target audience
