A lot of us go through life thinking that we have to accept whatever comes our way.
That we’re just stuck in a boring, soul-sucking job or a life we can’t seem to find joy in.
Stuck in a loveless marriage.
Stuck accepting crap from people who don’t appreciate you.
But the truth is that we have the ability to unlock our full potential and achieve anything we set our minds to.
It sound cheesy, I know. But if you really think about it, this same message has been touted and backed up by hundreds, if not thousands of self-help and personal development experts, not to mention thought leaders and famous philosophers throughout history.
Successful people do everything in their power to show up as the best version of themselves, day after day.
Everyone has the potential to succeed. You just have to want it. I mean, really want it.
Unless, of course, you’d rather just keep wandering around aimlessly running into the same problems, facing the same hardships for the rest of your life.
And wondering why you haven’t made anything of yourself.
It’s because you’ve never truly believed you could have more.
And that’s a terrible way to live, a terrible way to exist.
If you don’t want to be basic (like the masses) and actually achieve your life goals, something has gotta change.
And that something is you.
So start changing yourself little by little every day and when you look up one day, you’ll realize you’re a completely different person – for the better.
1. Show Up as Future You
When you finally reach the pinnacle of what success looks like to you, you’ll no doubt look different than you do now.
You’ll dress differently. You’ll move differently. You’ll feel differently.
What does that version of you look like? Does she wear heels? Does she wear a pantsuit? Dresses?
Does she wear her hair a certain way?
Whatever the successful version of yourself looks like, be her.
Every. Single. Day.
No excuses. The more you feel like that version of you, the closer you’ll get to her.
2. Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff
Being in business for yourself or taking any leap of faith in your dreams is always gonna be hard.
There are no exceptions.
What you have to know is how to let the small things roll off your back.
Don’t get all bent out of shape worrying about something that can be easily remedied or something that doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things.
Got one bad review because a customer didn’t read the listing right?
Don’t let it get to you.
Contact the customer and ask if there’s anything you can do. You’d be surprised how often simply reaching out can make someone change a 1-star review to a 4- or 5-star one.
Can’t really hurt to try, right?
3. Take Failure as a Learning Opportunity
Have you ever heard the mantra that you’ve got to fail your way to success?
Well, as silly as it might sound, it’s actually kind of true.
I can’t tell you how many businesses I’ve tried to open throughout the years.
How many times I’ve failed at things that I wasn’t really meant to do.
I had an errand-running business, a real estate business, I tried to start a small car dealership. The list goes on.
But I kept trying and I’m still trying to figure out my own personal path to success.
Because what worked for one person might not work for you, so don’t base your success on how well you do on someone else’s path.
Sometimes, you have to pave your own way. You might not have discovered that way, but if you keep pushing toward what you want, that way will find you.
So don’t take your failures so personally and definitely don’t let them define you.
Just learn from them. Realize that that’s not the way and find a new way.
4. Work Hard, Play Hard
The rapper Wiz Khalifa may have been onto something.
So many entrepreneurs make the mistake of thinking they have to grind 24/7 just to be successful.
Not a lot of gurus promote rest and relaxation as a way to rejuvenate and refresh so that you’ll be at your best when it comes time to run your business.
But I’m going to because I’ve always been a proponent of the work hard, play hard mantra.
I think you should play just as hard as you work because you deserve it, Sis.
Go get that spa treatment. Go get your mani-pedi. Or just lay around the house on a Sunday binge-watching Grey’s Anatomy in your bathrobe and slippers with a cup of cocoa in one hand and the remote in the other.
You deserve the best in life and you don’t have to wait until you’re “successful” to enjoy the fruits of your labor.
Just don’t go overboard and spend up all your money before you really start making some.
Treat yourself, but within reason.
5. Work on Your Inner Self
Working on your inner self means making sure you’re operating at the top of your game.
Work on your insecurities, learn to love yourself, start paying more attention to your inner self talk.
Are you telling yourself good things about yourself and your potential?
Are you running on conditioning from the past? Or are you making conscious decisions based on true facts?
Even if you don’t have any deep-seated pain or emotional trauma to overcome, you’ll still benefit from training your mind for success, which comes from working on your inner self.
If you overlook this step, you’ll have a much harder, longer road to success (if you get there at all). And I don’t say that to be mean. I say it to emphasize how important your mindset is to your success.
So start doing the work. Read books, listen to daily motivational podcasts, watch YouTube videos, say affirmations. Do whatever works for you.
But above all, be grateful.
Grateful for your mistakes, grateful for your triumphs, grateful for your overall growth.
Enjoy the journey and never let anyone tell you something’s impossible.
Doing the Work
Getting to the best version of yourself takes time and practice. It won’t happen overnight.
Just do one thing each day to improve your mindset and you’ll be well on your way to amazing things in the future.
Use the above as a guide to steer you in the right direction and get find a support circle or join a social media group of like-minded individuals. You’d be surprised how motivating it can be to see other people doing what you want to do.
