What is House Sitting?
Housesitting sounds like a pretty easy way to earn some extra cash and it kind of is, to be honest. While I’ve never done it personally, I’ve researched it a ton (when I was researching flipping houses and came across house sitting).
And most of the time, people really just want you to water the plants or feed/walk the dogs.
They want to make sure someone’s there to prevent a robbery.
In fact, I once read that, oftentimes, if a robbery occurs and no one is home, insurance won’t cover it (which is the reason a lot of people want house sitters). But I’m not sure how true that is here in the U.S. I’m gonna put my research powers to good use and update as soon as I know for sure.
What Do House Sitters Do?
House sitters don’t just sit around eating snacks, watching Netflix the whole time. Of course, there’ll be time for things like that after you’ve completed your daily household chores (which may vary, depending on the homeowner).
You might have to do some of the following:
Light housekeeping – Possibly dusting, taking out the trash, and basically just keeping the home in the same condition you found it in.
Household duties – You might be asked to forward mail, be there when the cable guy (or another service professional) comes to the home, or something similar.
Taking care of the plants – You might be asked to water the homeowner’s plants, cut the grass (if you’re there for an extended period of time), or perform other plant-related duties.
How Much Can I Earn House Sitting?
House sitters can earn a pretty penny doing next to nothing. In the U.S., house sitters earn an average of $70,166 per year, according to Zip Recruiter (as of November 2021).
You could earn more or less than that, depending on where you’re housesitting, the homeowner’s budget, and several other factors.
Where Can I Get Paid to House Sit?
Trusted House Sitters is a great place to start in your housesitting job hunting journey. It’s one of the most popular sites even though it’s only been in business since 2010.
The site allows you to apply for house-sitting jobs from all over the world. It’s one of the more expensive house-sitting sites, costing a whopping $119 per year. However, the site does offer occasional discounts.
A lot of the jobs on this site involve pet care, so keep that in mind. If you’re not an animal lover, you might want to skip over this entry (not to say you can’t find a job that doesn’t involve pet care).
Most of the jobs on this site are U.S.-based and are between two days and four weeks long.
Overseas jobs tend to go for longer.
Founded in 2005, Mind My House is a site that matches homeowners to house sitters from all over the world.

You can also wait for homeowners to contact you, but if you want to be proactive about it and get a house-sitting job as soon as possible, you should email the homeowners that you’re interested in sitting for.
HouseCarers.com has been in business since 2000 and its goal is to get sitters paid via free accommodations.
The best thing about this site is that there’s a free limited-time membership, so if you want to get into house-sitting without paying those annoying fees, check out HouseCarers.com first.
You might even be able to receive messages from homeowners for free. But if you want jobs, you have to pay the full membership price, which is $50 a year.
Luxury House Sitting might say it’s for luxury house sitting, but not all of the houses on the site would be considered “luxury” homes by anyone’s standard.
However, there are tons of international homes to sit in places like Ireland and Spain.
You’ll work for free accommodations and jobs range in length from a weekend to up to a year.
Nomador is an Australian house-sitting site launched in 2014. But the founders had a European house sitting site since 2007.
Another site that pays you in free accommodations around the world, Nomador has two membership options:

After registration, complete your profile and start searching for house-sitting jobs. Sometimes, house-sitting jobs aren’t paid. You’ll look after the home in exchange for free room and board. And sometimes, homeowners may even ask you to pay a portion of the electricity bill, since you’ll be the one using it while they’re gone.
Most house-sitting jobs will offer free room and board, so you’ll have to really look for the ones that pay. But, they may pay you to perform other duties, like watering the plants or feeding their pets.

The listing is published six times a year. You have to pay 65 cents per word to place an ad as a house sitter. If you want to subscribe, it costs $29.95 per year. It costs even more to get it in print.

Although most of the work is for pet care, housework, childcare, and senior care, sifting through the listings might get you a house sitting job in conjunction with another job (such as pet sitting).

You can actually find housesitting jobs (or advertise yourself as a house sitter) on the site.
Create a free ad telling people what you’re willing to do, what kind of pay (if any) you’re expecting, and when you’re available.
Then, sit back and wait for emails to come rolling in. Always use the Craigslist email they give you when you place the ad. Otherwise, you’re gonna get spammed to death.
